Colosseum Tickets Sold Out? Here's What to Do

If the standard Colosseum ticket is sold out for your date, look at the other official ticket types first, because each one has its own time slots. If your date is more than 30 days away, tickets may not be on sale yet. If nothing works, you can still see the Roman Forum and Palatine without a timed slot, and admire the Colosseum from outside.

How Colosseum tickets work

  • Official seller: the park's own booking site, ticketing.colosseo.it. Some tickets can also be bought at the ticket office.
  • When sales open: the park says sales open 30 days before the date of the visit. If your date is further out than that, it is not sold out yet; it simply has not been released.
  • Timed entry: booking a time slot is compulsory for the Colosseum, and you cannot enter at a different time from the one you booked. Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Named tickets and ID: tickets are issued in the holder's name, and you must show valid ID with your ticket at the entrance. For visits from 9 May 2026, a name can be changed only once, by midnight seven days before the visit, and only for set reasons such as a spelling mistake.

Try a different ticket type

When people say the Colosseum is sold out, they often mean the basic ticket. Check these too:

  • Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine (24 hours): €18. One Colosseum visit (first and second levels, not the arena) and one Forum and Palatine visit within 24 hours of your Colosseum slot. Time inside the Colosseum is limited to 75 minutes.
  • 24h Only Arena: €18. A short visit to the arena floor at a booked time, plus the Forum and Palatine.
  • Full Experience Underground and Arena: €24, or €32 with an educational tour. Valid for two consecutive days, with 90 minutes inside the Colosseum. The underground is subject to availability.
  • Other Full Experience tickets: the park lists several more variants on its tickets page. Check each one for your date, since they sell on separate slots.

EU citizens aged 18 to 24 pay a reduced €2 on these tickets. Prices are as listed by the park in October 2026 and can change.

Check back on the official site

The official pages do not describe a schedule for extra or last-minute releases, so there is no set time to wait for. It is still worth checking the booking site again over the following days, and trying different times of day on your chosen date. If your trip is flexible, check the day before and after too.

See the Forum and Palatine first

The Forum Pass SUPER costs €18 and covers the Roman Forum, Palatine and Imperial Fora, including sites such as the House of Augustus (closed Mondays). It needs no time reservation and can be used within 30 days of buying it online. It does not include the Colosseum, and it cannot be used on the free first Sunday. You still get views of the Colosseum from the area around it.

Free first Sundays

Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month, and also on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Free tickets cannot be booked online. They are handed out at the ticket offices in order of arrival. On free Sundays the arena, underground, upper levels and panoramic lift are not open, so expect a basic visit and possible queues.

Guided tours

The park says guided tours can be booked online or inside the Colosseum, and the Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket has a version that includes an educational tour. If you book a tour through a private company, make sure it is a real guided visit and that the ticket is in your name.

A warning about resellers

  • The park asks visitors to buy only through official sales channels.
  • Check that the price you pay matches the price printed on the ticket.
  • Because tickets are named and ID is checked, a ticket bought in someone else's name may not get you in.
  • For booking problems, the park's help desk is [email protected]. It says replies take 48 to 72 hours.
